    TRANSCRIPT

"...THE POPE ISSUED WHAT IS REGARDED IN U.N. CIRCLES, AND I THINK THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, AS THE MOST ELOQUENT APPEAL FOR WORLD PEACE THAT WAS MADE TO THAT ASSEMBLY, IN WHICH HE GAVE EXPRESSION TO THE SENTIMENTS THAT WE ALL SHARE: "NO MORE WAR, ANY MORE -- A SENTIMENT WHICH THE PRESIDENT AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SHARE."

"A STATEMENT BY THE HOLY FATHER IN RELATION TO A GREAT CONFLICT IS NOT A MATTER OF EASY MOMENT WHICH CAN BE HANDLED CASUALLY. THE PRESIDENT FELT, AND I THINK QUITE PROPERLY SO, THAT IT REQUIRED ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FROM HIM THROUGH AN INTERMEDIARY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. AND THAT'S WHY THE PRESIDENT SENT ME HERE AS A STRONG EXPRESSION OF INTEREST ON THE PART OF THE PRESIDENT AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN THE POPE'S ACTIVITIES IN THIS AREA, AND AS A STRONG INDICATION TO THE WORLD OF HOW WE VALUE, AND THE PRESIDENT VALUES, THE POPE'S CONTINUING INTEREST IN THE MATTER."
