    Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia on Monday (30 August) stressed the need of developing countries to increase food production to keep pace with ever-growing populations.

    The Emperor was addressing the opening session of a five-day conference on agricultural research and production organised by the Association for the Advancement of Agricultural Sciences in Africa and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

    The meeting is being attended by some 250 delegates from all over Africa.

    SYNOPSIS: A five-day conference on agricultural research and production opened in Addis Ababa on Monday. The opening address was made by Emperor Haile Selassie, who told the delegates that the need for developing countries to increase food production to keep pace with ever-growing populations was acute. He added that in order to achieve increased agricultural production to cope with the population growth, agricultural development must be based on science and technology.

    Other opening remarks were made by Mr Diallo Telli, the Secretary General of the Organisation for African Unity. He expressed his desire for the success of the conference and then delegates heard Doctor Banjo, who was deputising for Mr Robert Gardiner, the Executive Secretary of the united Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

    The conference is being attended by more than 250 delegates from all over Africa. They will be concentrating on the promotion of agricultural research in Africa. A special discussion day is to be set aside for inter-governmental co-operation in research.
