After the match, West German coach, Helmut Schoen, admitted he was baffled by the way his side had gone to pieces in the second half. He added: If we want to play a good role in the World Championships there will have to be various changes, especially from a tactical aspect."

Background: Soccer...and World Cup holders, West Germany, suffered a psychological set-back when they went down 1-0 to Brazil in a friendly match in Hambug on Wednesday (5 April). With the World Cup finals in Argentina only two months away, this was a match the West Germans wanted to win. But they struggled and only the crossbar of Sepp Maier's goal prevented long range shots from Vivelino, in the first half, and Edinho, in the second, making Brazil's victory even more convincing.

Synopsis: West Germany, in the light shirts playing from right to left, had gone 12 matches at home without defeat, but against the Brazilians little went right for them.

It was a match that produced a lot of rough tackling.

Brazil always looked likely to score -- but not this time.

The West German attacks usually fizzled out because of bad passing, or robust Brazilian tackling, but went down the right, it was clipped into the middle...and Fischer put a flashing header, only fractionally wide.

After the interval the West Germans were soon awarded a free kick...but it came to nothing...Still no score.

The Brazilians, beaten 1-0 by France in Paris on Saturday, went all out to break the deadlock, but they found it hard to turn their superiority into goals...The West Germans hit back strongly, but they lacked their usual power up front.

The Brazilians deserved a goal, and it came in the 75th minute..Nunes the scorer.

One-nil to Brazil...West Germany went all out for an equaliser, but it wasn't their night.
