  • Description

AMERICAN TOY SHOPS REPORT A SERIOUS DECLINE IN THE POPULARITY OF WAR TOYS. ALTHOUGH THEY OFFER A LIMITLESS CHOICE OF MOST INGENIOUS WEAPONS, AS WELL AS OLD-ESTABLISHED NURSERY FAVOURITES, PARENTS ARE RELUCTANT TO BUY SUCH TOYS; IN SOME CASES, SALES HAVE DECLINED BY ALMOST 70 PER CENT.

IN FORMER YEARS WAR TOYS WERE VIRTUALLY THE BIGGEST SELLERS IN THE TOY SHOPS. THE DECLINE SET IN OVER THE PAST MONTHS, AND IS PARTICULARLY NOTICEABLE NOW THAT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IS AT ITS PEAK.

THE EVER GREATER INGENUITY OF THESE TOYS HAS NOT, APPARENTLY, ENHANCED THEIR APPEAL. AMONG THOSE LEFT ON THE SHELVES ARE RIFLES, SUB-MACHINEGUNS, REPLICAS OF COMBAT BAZOOKAS AND OTHER WEAPONS WHICH ARE NEAR EXACT IMITATIONS OF THE REAL THING. MOST OF THEM COME EQUIPPED WITH FIRING MECHANISMS THAT PRODUCE THE SOUND OF GUNSHOTS; SOME OF THE MORE ELABORATE, LIKE AN AUTOMATIC RIFLE SHOWN IN THIS FILM, HAVE TAPE-RECORDED SOUND EFFECTS BUILT INTO THEM. EVEN THE OLD FAVOURITES - COWBOY PISTOLS AND GUNFIGHTER RIGS - HAVE FALLEN FROM FAVOUR.

"DEFINITELY OUT", - IN THE WORDS OF TOY RETAILERS - IS G.I. JOE, THE FOOT-HIGH MODEL OF AN AMERICAN SOLDIER WITH HIS FULL RANGE OF OUTFITS AND ACCESSORIES.

NO MAJOR INCREASE IN THE SALE OF OTHER ARTICLES HAS BEEN NOTED TO MAKE UP FOR THE BIG DROP IN WAR TOY SALES.
