  • Description

It is rare for a zoo to complain about having too many animals, when two thousand mallard ducks drop in fore free food and shelter, perhaps there are groups for complaint. And that is the size of the problem now being faced by the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

The Brookfield is used to having a few hundred mallards staying for a few days while on their migratory flights southward, but this year, two thousand of them touched down on the ponds normally reserved for more rare species - and they are staying there.

Zoo officials are seriously concerned at the cost of keeping their unwanted guests. They have no option but to scatter sufficient food for if they failed to do so, their prize species would starve. But it is costing the zoo five hundred dollars a week extra.

They have tried rounding up the mallards and putting them on ponds and lakes in the nearby countryside, but they always return to where they can get regular meals and sheltered water.
