  • Description

Competitors from 17 nations entered the men's and women's slalom on the first day of the European water Ski Championships at Vienna, August 13th. They came from Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Britain, Italy, Luxemburg, Lebanon, Morocco, Monaco, Rhodesia, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, Holland, Switzerland and Austria.

Piera Castelvetri of Italy won the women's slalom -- for the second time. She successfully circumnavigated 36 buoys on the course. Miss Lynn-Taylor of Britain tied with Miss Amman of Switzerland for fifth place.

Heavy rain fell during this morning event and continued throughout the day, postponing the opening ceremony until the following day. The afternoon's event, the men's slalom, saw a surprise win by the young Austrian Bernd Rauchenwald. He was the only competitor to complete the course at a speed of 60 kilometres an hour. The new champion made his first run at 51 kilometres an hour and wove without fault past both with 29 buoys. The former champion, Muller of France was sixth.
