The United Nations Commissioner for Namibia (South West Africa) Mr. Sean Macbride, has predicted that Rhodesia will be invaded by black nationali??? guerrillas from Mozambique and Zambia "within weeks".
Mr. Macbride said the Smith regime's army would only withstand the attack for about a month -- referring to the white army of Rhodesian Premier Ian Smith's government.
He said the "onslaught" on Rhodesia would take place in a matter of weeks.
"It will come from Mozambique, where a substantial number of Rhodesian have been receiving military training from the Chinese and also from the Russians," he said.
Mr. Macbride thought there would also be a thrust from Zambia. He said that Zambia had been altering course very sharply in the present situation. He said he thought it would join in any struggle that took place to set up an independent state of Zimbabwe (Rhodesia).
Mr. Macbride, a Nobel Peace Winner and former Irish Foreign Minister said it was possible the smith regime could collapse before Easter, and he thought it was doubtful that the South Africans would be able to assist the Rhodesians.
"South Africa has too much on her own plate, that is why South Africa has been pressing the smith regime to come to terms," he said.
Mr. Macbride said he doubted whether Mr. Smith would be able to come to an agreement with the African Nationalists under Joshua Nkomo.
He said Namibia would be the next target of the African states.
