Israel have asked France to hold M. Abu Daoud as a first step in a full extradition demand, so he can face charges of masterminding the attack on the Israeli Olympic team. But sources, quoted by Reuters news agency, said France would be unlikely to grant an extradition request from Israel because this could jeopardise the credibility of the country's Middle East stance. However, Reuters added that the French government might look more favourably on an extradition demand from West Germany, since both countries are partners in a European Common Market campaign against international terrorism.

Background: INTRODUCTION: At a press conference in Paris on Monday (10 January) the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) representative M. Ezzedine Kalak described the arrest of Palestinian guerrilla leader, M. Abu Daoud, as "astonishing". He referred to M. Abu Daoud as "our brother Youssef Radji". French police have said that M. Daoud, who was travelling under the assumed name of Youssef Radji, had come to France to attend the funeral of Palestinian militant Mahmoud Saleh, shot in Paris a week ago. M. Daoud was arrested in a Paris hotel on Friday (7 January). He has been accused of planning the attack on Israeli Olympic team at Munich, West Germany, five years ago. 17 people were killed in the incident. At Monday's press conference M. Kalak gave the Palestinian Liberation Organisation's view on the arrest of M. Daoud.
