  • Description

Despite the protestations of Turkey and neutral observers that Syria is in no danger of military attack, army authorities in Damascus are going ahead with the training of a civilian army, comprising men and women ranging between the ages of 16 and 60.

The latest development is the issue of modern rifles and machine guns to the 'Home Guard' after a three-weeks period of proficiency training.

The authorities stress that this issue of arms is merely a measure for the protection of the civilians' own homes.

The sound of rifle fire echos all day through the streets and open spaces of Damascus as the volunteers learn to handle their brand new weapon.

In answer to adverse criticism, from various quarters, on the Syrian Government's decision to issue these arms, Colonel Salah Siari , Syrian Army C-in-C of the volunteer forces, explains the policy in an exclusive interview with our special correspondent.
