The two brothers charged with the murder of Mrs. Muriel McKay, the newspaper executive's wife?

  • Description

The two brothers charged with the murder of Mrs. Muriel McKay, the newspaper executive's wife who vanished from her home in Wimbledon, South London, 44 days ago, were ordered to be held in custody for a week in a brief court appearance today, during which they pleaded not guilty.

A Black Maria brought the brothers - Arthur Hosein, 36 and Nizamodeen Hosein, 21 - to the court from the police station only 100 yards (91 m.) away. Police pushed back a crowd of about 200 who tried to surge into the courtyard behind the Black Maria.

The Hosein brothers, who are of Trinidad-Indian origin, were charged with the murder last night. They were also charged with demanding one million sterling with menaces from the husband of the missing woman, Mr. Alick McKay who is Deputy Chairman of the paper, "News of the World".

No body has been found, but the murder charge against the Hosein brothers is not the first brought under British law without a body being found. The prosecution only needs to prove the victim was killed by the accused to obtain a conviction for murder. Police have spend three days searching the isolation Rook's Farm in Hertfordshire, from which the accused brothers were brought to Wimbledon police station on Saturday night. Now they have extended their intensive search to another small farm three miles away, after a tip-off from an elderly women living nearby who claims to have seen a woman being driven to the farm, but not back from the farm, about Christmas time.

The courtroom at Wimbledon was crowded with journalists and police officers for today's hearing. About 40 spectators stood in the small public gallery. There was no application for bail and the case was over in two minutes. The next hearing was set for February 18.
