    LADY JIBOWU: "When the world committee accepted the invitation of the Ghana Girl Guides Association to hold this meeting, we knew it would mean a lot of work for all the leaders of the association. But they have risen to the occasion. And I thank the President, the Chief Commissioner, the National Secretary of the Ghana Girl Guides Association for the hard work they and their helpers have put into making this occasion for us."

    Background: An international commissioners' meeting of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts opened at the University of Ghana in Accra on Friday (July 6th). The eight day meeting is being attended by 80 delegates from 52 countries -- including Ghana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, the United States, Britain, France and Australia.

    The organisers were at pains to show their international visitors an immediate glimpse of Ghanaian culture -- and local guides performed colourful and energetic Ghanaian dances. But first at the opening session the visitors were welcomed by Lady Deborah Jibowu, World Member and chairman of the Planning Committee for the meeting:
    SYNOPSIS: The University of Ghana, Accra, became the meeting point for leaders of the Girl Guide movement from all over the world on Friday. Eighty commissioners from the world Guide Association -- representing fifty-two countries -- assembled there for an international meeting. Lady Deborah Jibowu welcomed them:
    The organisers showed their international visitors an immediate glimpse of Ghanaian culture -- dances performed by local girl guides.

    The eight-day meeting was to include a brief sightseeing tour and intensive lectures and seminars on international understanding and cooperation.
