  • Description

THE 56TH INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW OPENED IN PARIS TODAY (2 OCTOBER), WITH THE BATTLE AMONG BRITISH, FRENCH, AND ITALIAN MANUFACTURERS FOR THE MEDIUM-POWERED FAMILY-SALOON MARKET PROMINENT.

TWO NEW FRENCH MODELS, THE PEUGEOT 304, WHICH LOOKS LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN THE LUXURY 504 SALOON AND THE SMALLER 204, AND THE RENAULT R12, WERE ON DISPLAY. THE PEUGEOT HAS A TRANSVERSELY MOUNTED ENGINE, WHILE THE RENAULT'S IS MOUNTED CONVENTIONALLY, BUT IN OTHER RESPECTS THEY ARE VERY THE SAME: FOUR-CYLINDER 1,300cc. ENGINE, FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE, RACK-AND-PINION STEERING, FOUR-SPEED FULLY SYNCHRONISED GEARBOX, AND DISC BRAKES ON THE FRONT WHEELS. THE RENAULT HAS INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION TO THE FRONT WHEELS, WHILE THE PEUGEOT'S INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION IS ALL ROUND.

ITALY'S CHALLENGER FOR THE MEDIUM-POWERED FAMILY-SALOON MARKET IS THE FIAT 128, TAKING OVER FROM THE 125, WHICH HAS SOLD VERY WELL IN FRANCE. THE 128 ALSO HAS A TRANSVERSELY MOUNTED ENGINE -- THE FIRST TIME FIAT HAS EVER DONE THIS -- BUT IT IS SLIGHTLY LOWER POWERED AT 1,200cc.

AS USUAL, THERE WERE CARS FOR THE MORE SPORTY MINDED, OPEL EXHIBITING ITS AERO GT AND AN EXPERIMENTAL MODEL.

THE SHOW IS OPEN UNTIL 12 OCTOBER, WITH 930 EXHIBITORS -- 370 OF THEM FOREIGN -- DISPLAYING THEIR WARES. BRITAIN HEADS THE LIST OF FOREIGN EXHIBITORS WITH 27, FOLLOWED BY ITALY, 14, USA, 12, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, 11, JAPAN, 4, SWEDEN, 2, AND AUSTRIA, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, USSR, HOLLAND, AND BELGIUM WITH ONE EACH. FRANCE HAS 10 EXHIBITORS.
