Background: FRENCH BREEDERS OF CHAROLAIS BEEF CATTLE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) CELEBRATED THE CENTENARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BREED WITH A PARADE OF BULLS AND COWS AT AN AGRICULTURAL SHOW IN VICHY, CENTRAL FRANCE.

THE CHAROLAIS BREED WAS DEVELOPED IN THE NEVERS AND CHAROLLES REGIONS OF FRANCE, AND BULLS ARE NOW EXPORTED TO 34 COUNTRIES, INCLUDING RUSSIA, JAPAN BRAZIL AND EVEN THE ARGENTINE - ITSELF AN EXPORTER OF BEEF.

YESTERDAY'S AGRICULTURAL SHOW WAS ATTENDED BY THE FRENCH MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE, M. PISANI. PRIZES WERE AWARDED FOR THE BEST BULLS AND COWS IN THE SHOW.

IN A SPEECH, M.PISANI EMPHASISED THAT CHAROLAIS CATTLE WERE HIGHLY PRIZED IN MANY COUNTRIES OVERSEAS BECAUSE OF THEIR BULK AND HIGH QUALITY MEAT. THIS, HE SAID, WAS ESPECIALLY SO IN COUNTRIES WHERE MEAT WAS SCARCE AND OF HIGH PRICE.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE FRENCH CHAROLAIS BREEDERS IN THEIR EXPORT DRIVE IS THE UNITED STATES MARKET, BECAUSE OF ITS SIZE. A CHAROLAIS BREEDING BULL IS WORTH UP TO 100,000 FRANCS (ABOUT GBP9,000) AND GOOD COWS ARE SOLD FOR UP TO 30,000 FRANCS (MORE THAN GBP2,000).

A CHAMPION BULL MAY WEIGH 3,000 POUNDS (ABOUT 1,400 KILOGRAMS) AND A COW MAY WEIGH UP TO 2,600 POUNDS (ABOUT 1,200 KILOGRAMS).
