  • Description

Large crowds turned out at nomination centres in Singapore as contestants for the general elections came forward to put their names down for a possible seat in Parliament.

The General Secretary of the United People's Front, Mr. Harbans Singh, will be standing against the Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, in the elections scheduled to be held on December 23rd.

The ruling People's Action Party...or PAP...has already captured sixteen uncontested seats. Mr. Lee said he expected PAP would "sweep" the six opposition parties.

The prime Minister said he called the election well before it was due in September because he believed in "clearing the docks before running into rough weather."
Political observers in Singapore say that PAP is certain to win the elections, with interest largely being on what percentage of the vote the party will eventually get.
