Background: The Nigerian head of state, Lieutenant General Olusegun Obasanjo, arrived in Tanzania on Thursday (September 1) for a three-day official visit. It follows a journey to Nigeria last November by Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere.
SYNOPSIS: Prime Minister Edward Sokonie, on the left, and first Vice-President Aboued Jumbo, in the centre, were with President Nyerere at Dar es-Salaam airport to greet the Nigerian head of state. General Obasanjo came to power in February last year, after succeeding the late General Murtala Muhammad, who died in an abortive coup. He'd been Murtala's deputy. A crowd of several hundred people were at the airport to greet him.
General Obasanjo was described in a front-page editorial in the Tanzanian Government newspaper the 'Daily News' as 'the head of the African revolution' Nigeria, said the paper was in the forefront of the struggle to oust the white minority regimes of southern Africa.
