    TRI QUANG HAS DEMANDED THAT THE GOVERNMENT RESCIND A DECREE PROMULGATED IN JULY WHICH RECOGNISED A MODERATE PRO-GOVERNMENT BUDDHIST FACTION AS THE LEGAL VOICE OF THE BUDDHIST CHURCH.

    THE 43-YEAR-OLD MILITANT MONK SAID HE WAS SUFFERING FROM PAINS AND CRAMP AFTER A WEEK OF BEING ALTERNATIVELY BAKED BY THE TROPICAL SUN AND DRENCHED BY MONSOON SHOWERS.

    BUT HE WAS VOWED TO CONTINUE THE VIGIL UNTIL PRESIDENT-ELECT NGUYEN VAN THIEU OR VICE-PRESIDENT-ELECT NGUYEN CAO KY AGREE TO MEET HIM.

    MEANWHILE, ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATION HAVE SPREAD TO THE NORTHERN PROVINCES. IN QUANG NGAI ON WEDNESDAY MORE THAN 100 BUDDHIST MONKS AND NUNS MARCHED IN SUPPORT OF TRI QUANG'S DEMAND.

    AIR MARSHALL KY HAS ISSUED A DECREE ASKING THE RIVAL BUDDHIST LEADERS TO SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS AMONG THEMSELVES IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST. BUT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) ONE OF THEM SAID THAT A TOTAL OF 110 MONKS, NUNS AND LAY BUDDHIST HAD VOLUNTEERED TO BURN THEMSELVES IF THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT MEET THEIR DEMANDS.
