    France launched its fourth nuclear submarine ar Cherbourg on Tuesday (17 September) as the navy started converting its whole nuclear submarine fleet to carry new multiple warhead missiles which will be twice the strength of its present Polaris-type weapons.

    The launching of the 9,000 ton submarine Indomptable put France on a par with Britain in missile armed nuclear submarines. Like other French nuclear submarines, the Indomitable will carry 16 missiles of megaton size with a range of 300 kilometres.

    The launching ceremony was presided over by the French Defence Ministry's Chief Arms Officials, M. Jean Laurens Delpech, who said the cost of the new Submarine was about was about 1,000 million france (GBP 90 million sterling).
