  • Description

BRITAIN TODAY (THURSDAY) WON THE NATIONS CUP FROM ITALY AND THE UNITED STATES AT THE INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW AT LONDON'S WHITE CITY, AND BOOSTED THEIR HOPES FOR HONOURS AT THE TOKYO OLYMPICS.

IN THE TEAM EVENT AT THE 1960 OLYMPICS, BRITAIN FINISHED SEVENTH. THE GOLD MEDAL WINNERS AT THAT TIME, GERMANY, ARE NOT COMPETING AT THE SHOW, BUT THE UNITED STATES AND ITALY FINISHED SECOND AND THIRD RESPECTIVELY IN ROME.

THE BRITISH TEAM OF THREE MEN AND A WOMAN WON CONVINCINGLY. THE EVENT WAS DECIDED OVER TWO ROUNDS OF THE DIFFICULT COURSE WITH THE BEST THREE PERFORMANCES IN EACH TEAM COUNTING TOWARDS THE POINTS SCORE.

BRITAIN FINISHED WITH NO FAULTS. ITALY HAD 15, THE UNITED STATES 16, WHO WON'T BE COMPETING IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES, WERE LAST WITH 24 FAULTS.

IRELAND'S HOPES PLUNGED WHEN 24 YEAR OLD MISS DIANA CONOLLY-CAREW FELL FROM HER GREY GELDING BARRYMORE ON THE FIRST ROUND AND WAS INJURED.

MISS CONOLLY-CAREW LAY MOTIONLESS FOR A MINUTE, THEN WALKED AWAY BUT LATER COLLAPSED AND WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS SAID TO BE SUFFERING FROM SLIGHT CONCUSSION.

BRITAIN'S WINNING TEAM WAS PETER ROBESON (FIRECREST); MISS ELIZABETH BROOME (JACAPO); DAVID BARKER (NORTH RIDING); AND HARVEY SMITH (O'MALLEY). THE FIRST THREE ALL HAD TO CLEAR ROUNDS.
