  • Description

Over 100 countries were represented at the third Oil Workers Conference, which opened at the Palais des Nations in Algiers on Thursday (27 March).

The 500 participants came from both oil-producing and consumer nations and were mostly delegates from oil industry unions and international trades unions.

The theme of this year's two-day meeting was "The Fight Against Monopolies" and its study covered about 20 points, grouped under three main headings. These were: the history of capitalist exploitation of the petroleum industry; current problems in relation to oil interests and an examination of these problems in the interests of oil workers throughout the world.

The conference was opened by Algeria's Minister for Industry and Energy, Mr. Belaid Abessalem, who welcomed the delegates and emphasised the importance of their forthcoming discussions.

The anti-monopolist movement in the oil industry was started in 1967, when -- on the invitation of Algeria -- an action committee was formed by seven countries - Algeria, France, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Egypt and the Soviet Union.

Since then the petroleum workers' anti-monopolist movement has grown to cover all continents.
