  • Description

THE KWILU RIVER AREA, IN CONGO-KINSHASA, WAS A FAVOURITE TOURIST CENTRE PRIOR TO THE TROUBLES OF 1964-65, BUT DURING THE CONFLICT, THE PEACE AND BEAUTY OF THIS REGION WAS SHATTERED. BRIDGES WERE WRECKED AND MANY OF THE BEAUTY SPOTS WERE RAZED. NOW, AFTER TWO YEARS OF POLITICAL STABILITY, MANY OF THE SCARS HAVE HEALED AND MUCH HAS BEEN DONE TO RESTORE THE ECONOMY OF THE KWILU REGION.

THE PRINCIPAL INCOME IN THIS REGION STEMS FROM THE PALM TREES. THE OIL, EXTRACTED FROM THE NUTS, AT FACTORIES ON THE RIVER BANK, PROVIDES THE AREA WITH FINANCIAL STABILITY. BUT, BEFORE THE INDUSTRY COULD BE RESUMED, IT WAS NECESSARY TO REBUILD THE BRIDGES AND ROADS, LEADING TO THE FACTORIES, SO THAT THE HARVEST COULD BE TRANSPORTED.

IN SOME PLACES, IMPROVISED FERRIES STILL TAKE THE PLACE OF BRIDGES, AWAITING REBUILDING. BUT, THE PALM-NUT HARVEST IS REACHING THE FACTORIES AND THE ECONOMY IS RECOVERING STEADILY.
