Background: President Abu Sayeed Chowdhury of Bangladesh arrived in New Delhi on Monday (27 November) to begin a ten-day visit.
President V.V. Giri welcomed his host, who began his tour with a ceremony at the Raj Ghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi's daughter, Prime Minister Mrs Indira gandhi, had been among the welcoming party at the airport.
Later there was a banquet, at which the Presidents each spoke of the close friendship between their two countries and President Chowdhury invited the Indian President to visit Bangladesh.
President Giri supported Bangladesh's claim to United Nations membership. He said: "The day is not far off when the UN will become richer by Bangladesh taking its legitimate place in that organisation."
