  • Description

FARMERS IN THE SOUTH WEST OF RHODESIA NEAR BULAWAYO ARE FIGHTING A LAST ROUND IN A DESPERATE BATTLE AGAINST A DROUGHT THAT HAS LASTED FOR FIVE YEARS. THEY ARE MOVING THEIR WEAKENED HERDS FROM RUINED PASTURE TO BETTER LAND BRITAIN, CANADA AND AUSTRALIA HAVE ANNOUNCED A PLAN TO AID THE FARMERS AND THE AFRICAN PEASANTS FACING STARVATION ACROSS A HUGE STRETCH OF AFRICA HIT BY THE DROUGHT.

THE DROUGHT HAS HIT WHITE RHODESIAN FARMERS ESPECIALLY HARD. THEY ARE ALREADY FACING DIFFICULTIES CAUSED BY BRITISH SANCTIONS AGAINST THE REBEL RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT, AND THE MAMMOTH CATTLE DRIVE HAS FORCED THEM TO DIG DEEP INTO THEIR POCKETS. THEY WILL HAVE TO LEAVE THEIR HOMESTEADS UNTIL THEY CAN BRING THEIR HERDS BACK AGAIN, BUT EXPERTS SAY THAT EVEN IF IT RAINED NOW IT WOULD NOT REVIVE PARCHED GRAZING LAND. THE RAINS HAVE FAILED FOR FIVE YEARS RUNNING, AND THE BURNING HEAT HAS KILLED OFF GRASS SEEDS.

THE WORST SUFFERERS ARE THE AFRICAN FARMERS, WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO MOVE THEIR CATTLE. THE COMMONWEALTH AID PLAN THAT IS INTENDED TO SAVE THEM FROM STARVATION WILL SOMEHOW HAVE TO OVERCOME THE FINANCIAL RESTRICTIONS AND THE OIL EMBARGO THAT HAVE BEEN IMPOSED ON THE COUNTRY.
