  • Description

IN FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY, A COLUMN OF ABOUT 10,000 CIVIL-RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED AROUND THE STATE CAPITOL ON THURSDAY TO DRAMATIZE THEIR DEMANDS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, MARCHING FIFTEEN ABREAST AND STRETCHING OUT FOR MORE THAN SIX CITY BLOCKS, THEN MASSED ON THE TERRACES AND FRONT STEPS OF THE CAPITOL FOR A 90-MINUTE PROGRAMME OF SPEECHES AND SINGING, FEATURING THE REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING AND OTHER NATIONAL INTEGRATION LEADERS.

MASS RACIAL DEMONSTRATIONS WILL BE RESUMED IN BIRMINGHAM TOO -- WITHIN 30 DAYS BECAUSE THE CITY HAS GONE BACK ON INTEGRATION PLEDGES.

AFTER A MEETING OF 200 ALABAMA NEGRO LEADERS, KING TOLD NEWSMEN THAT BIRMINGHAM OFFICIALS AND MERCHANTS HAD FAILED TO CARRY OUT PROMISES MADE FOLLOWING MASS DEMONSTRATIONS THERE LAST SUMMER. HE DESCRIBED THE MEETING AS THE BEGINNING OF A MASSIVE EFFORT TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS OF SEGREGATION AND DISCRIMINATION.

IN ALABAMA, MORE MEASURES ARE BEING TAKEN IN THE CIVIL-RIGHTS CAMPAIGN. THEY INCLUDE AN ECONOMIC BOYCOTT IN WHICH NEGROES WILL BUY GOODS ONLY AT STORES WHERE EMPLOYERS PERMIT NEGRO EMPLOYEES.
