  • Description

CROWDS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE DUTCH PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS TODAY(TUESDAY) TO WATCH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT ARRIVE FOR THE DEBATE ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF PRINCESS IRENE.

THE THREE HOUR DEBATE AS TELEVISED IN FULL ACROSS THE NATION. IT AROSE OUT OF A LETTER FROM THE PRIME MINISTER QUOTING STATEMENTS ON BEHALF OF THE PRINCESS THAT SHE WOULD WED HER FIANCE. PRINCE HUGO OF BOURBON PARMA, ABROAD AND WOULD NOT GO WITH HER PARENTS TO MEXICO.

THE DEBATE WAS OPENED BY MR. ANNE VONDELING, FLOOR LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION LABOUR PARTY, WHO SAID THE AFFAIR HAD MADE "ONLY A SURPRISINGLY SMALL DENT" IN THE IMAGE OF THE ROYAL DUTCH HOUSE. HE WAS CONFIDENT THAT IT WOULD WEATHER THE STORM. "NEVERTHELESS, WE THINK IT IS ALL VERY SAD FOR THE PRINCESS, ESPECIALLY FOR THE QUEEN AND ALSO THE WHOLE COUNTRY" MR. VONDELING DECLARED.

SUMMING UP MR. VONDELING SAID THE DUTCH LABOUR PARTY AGREED WITH THE GOVERNMENT'S VIEWS THAT IT COULD NO LONGER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PRINCESS IRENE'S ACTIONS AND STATEMENTS.

POLITICAL OBSERVES IN HOLLAND SAID THAT ALTHOUGH PARLIAMENT ONLY "TOOK NOTE" OF THE PRIME MINISTER'S LETTER, THE DEBATE SET THE SEAL OF PARLIAMENTARY ON GOVERNMENT POLICY.

NONE OF THE SPEAKERS OPPOSED THE GOVERNMENT'S STAND.

AT THE END OF THE DEBATE THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. MARIJNEN, ANNOUNCED THAT DUTCH CROWN PRINCESS BEATRIX IS TO VISIT OTTAWA AT THE END OF HER CURRENT STAY IN MEXICO AND WILL RETURN TO HOLLAND THE DAY AFTER QUEEN JULIANA AND PRINCE BERNHARD.
