  • Description

POPE PAUL, CARRYING A WOODEN CROSS DURING PART OF THE CEREMONY, PRAYED LAST NIGHT (GOOD FRIDAY) AT THE 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS OUTSIDE THE ROMAN COLISEUM IN A GOOD FRIDAY CEREMONY ATTENDED BY A GREAT CONVENTION OF EASTER PILGRIMS. EARLIER, IN A CEREMONY COMMEMORATING THE DEATH OF CHRIST, THE POPE DOFFED HIS PAPAL ROSES, AND, BAREFOOT, PROSTRATED HIMSELF TO KISS A CRUCIFIX AT THE ALTAR OF ROME'S ST. MARY MAJOR CHURCH.

A CONGREGATION WHICH INCLUDED FOREIGN DIPLOMATS AND CHURCH DIGNITARIES SAW THE POPE WALKS SOLEMNLY TO THE ALTAR, STRIPPED OF ITS RICH DRAPERY, TO PROSTRATE HIMSELF BEFORE THE CRUCIFIX. HE DID NOT WEAR HIS PAPAL RING - IN ACCORD WITH THE SPIRIT OF MOURNING - AND DID NOT BLESS THE PILGRIMS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE CHURCH. TWELVE CARDINALS ACCOMPANIED THE PONFIFF AS THE PLAIN-SONG REMEMBERED THE STORY OF CHRIST'S PASSION AND DEATH.

LATER, THE 69-YEAR-OLD POPE, A SIMPLE FIGURE IN WHITE, WALKED FROM THE COLISEUM, WHERE MANY EARLY CHRISTIANS DIED IN GLADIATORIAL GAMES, AND FROM THE 11TH STATION ONWARDS, CARRIED A TALL WOODEN CROSS. THE ONLY LIGHT CAME FROM FLICKERING TORCHES BORNE BY YOUNG MEN ESCORTING THE POPE, AND FROM LARGE FLAMING CROSSES AT THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE AND IN THE FORUM.

THE POPE DID NOT SPEAK IN THE ST. MARY MAJOR CEREMONY, BUT AT THE END OF THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS HE ADDRESSED THE PILGRIMS. MANY PEOPLE, HE SAID, WOULD LIKE THE GOSPEL TO BE MORE SERENE, HAPPY AND CONVENIENT, AND MORE IN HARMONY WITH MAN'S DESIRE TO REMOVE PAIN AND SACRIFICE FROM LIFE. BUT WITHOUT THE PAIN THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST 'IT WOULD BE GOSPEL, A CHRISTIANITY WITHOUT REDEMPTION, WITHOUT THE SALVATION WHICH - AND WE MUST RECOGNISE THIS WITH STARK SINCERITY - WE ABSOLUTELY REQUIRE'.

THE BELLS OF ROME WERE SILENT TODAY, BUT TONIGHT THEY WILL RING OUT, SYMBOLISING THE RISEN CHRIST. AT ST. PETER'S POPE PAUL WILL CONDUCT THE CEREMONY OF LIGHTING THE EASTER CANDLE, AND BLESSING THE BAPTISMAL FONT, BEFORE TAKING MASS ON THE DAY OF CHRIST'S RESURRECTION.
