  • Description

Passengers were screened by electronic detectors and searches were made in all luggage, but the French luxury liner France left Cannes on Sunday night (April 29) without incident at the start of a week-long cruise to Israel.

Though security was tight, the giant liner did not have the iron security used two weeks ago when Britain's Queen Elizabeth 2 made the same journey with a load of American and British Jews going to Israel for the 25th anniversary celebrations.

The French Line said only its own security men handled the screening of the 800 passengers as they boarded and there would be no special security or bomb disposal people on board, as there had been on the British liner.

In both cases, security was heightened by fears of violent action against passengers and ships by Palestinian guerrilla groups.
