  • Description

Police removed 35 accused South Moluccan separatists to safety from a court building at the Hague on Monday (14 December) after a telephoned bomb threat had been received.

The threat came shortly after the opening of the trial of the South Moluccans accused of being involved in the storming of the Indonesian Embassy residence on August 13th, and in machine-gunning to death a Dutch police guard.

The bomb threat came after the first adjournment, after Paul Carel Thenu, a 41-year-old South Moluccan, had told the Hague District Court he regarded himself as responsible for last August's raid.

The raiders, members of a group demanding the independence of their region from Indonesia, shot their way into the Embassy residence in August, and occupied it for 12 hours, holding the wife of the ambassador, her two children and four embassy staff hostage before surrending to police.

As Thenu made the statement steel-helmeted police with wicker shields and truncheon at the ready patrolled nearby streets which had been sealed off to all except those with special police passes.
