  • Description

THE WORLD'S FIRST WANKEL - POWERED ROTARY-PISTON FAMILY CAR IS TO BE UNVEILED AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW ON SEPTEMBER 12. IT HAS BEEN PRODUCED BY WEST GERMANY'S NSU COMPANY, AND IS ALREADY SURE OF BEING THE STAR OF THE EVENT.

ALTHOUGH MANY FACTS ABOUT THE NEW CAR ARE BEING KEPT SECRET UNTIL THE LAST MOMENT, IT IS KNOWN THAT THE RO 80, AS IT WILL BE CALLED, WILL BE POWERED BY A TWIN ROTARY-PISTON ENGINE DEVELOPING 115 BRAKE HORSEPOWER. IT WILL HAVE A TOP SPEED OF BETWEEN 95MPH (153 KM) AND 100 MPH (161 KM), AND WILL RUN MORE QUIETLY THAN ANY CURRENT SIX-CYLINDER POWER UNIT.

THE RO 80 IS STYLISH, ITS 13-FOOT (4 METRES) BODY IS HAS BEEN PRODUCED AFTER FOUR YEARS OF WIND-TUNNEL TESTS IN STUTTGART, AND INCLUDES A GENTLY-ROUNDED SLOPE ON THE FRONT SECTION, WITH AN INWARD-CURVED TAIL TO REDUCE TURBULENCE.

THE WATER-COOLED ENGINE DRIVES THE FRONT WHEELS THROUGH A FULLY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, WITH ENGINE AND GEARBOX FORMING A COMPACT UNTIL AHEAD OF THE WHEELS.

THE NEW WANKEL-ENGINED CAR WILL CARRY 4 - 5 PASSENGERS. THE PREVIOUS WANKEL WAS A SINGLE-ROTOR SPORTS CAR, IN PRODUCTION SINCE 1950.
