  • Description

Heavily benedalled former German Air Force pilots, some with the iron cross glinting on their civilian clothes, attended the unveiling ceremony in Vienna on June 22 of the memorial of the German Air Ace, Luftwaffe Major Walter Nowotny, who fought in over 250 air battles before being shot down in 1944.

Among his old comrades who formed an honour guard with insignia of the Swastika and Veterans' Association banners were the Major's parents and his brother.

Members of the National Youth of Austria in shorts and skirts stood at attention in memory of the hero who at one time commanded the first German squadron of jet-planes. As a drummer beat out a drum roll, woman dabbed emotion from their eyes.

The Major, who was 24 when he met his death, was shot down by the French Air Ace Pierre Clostermann in an American Fighter.
