  • Description

The English Lions kick off in the First Rugby Union Test yesterday in Brisbane - a scrappy match in which the Lions defeated Australia by seventeen points to six. In possession, Australian halfback Connor who tries to pass to left winger Donald, but is forced out over the line. Both sides were affected by nerves and the Brisbane heat, which was around seventy degrees for most of the match.

Australia's first penalty. Donald misses from twenty five yards out. His next three attempts also failed. These four goals could have snatched an Australian victory by one point.

From this lineout and ruck, the Lions Halfback Jeeps goes the blind side and passes back into the forwards. But the move fails. After five minutes of play there was still no score, but from the following lineout won by Australia, Lions breakaway Ken Smith bustles his way through gathers the ball but runs into trouble. But a quick heel puts the Lions on the attack. Nippy five eighth Bev Risman starts a movement in which fullback Ken SCOTLAND joins to send dashing Irish winger O'Reilly in for the British Isles' first try.

The conversion attempt for the Lions by Hewitt fails. After that the match settled down into a game of errors with bad handling, too much individualist work, and over use of the line kick.

Australia's five eighth goes down, and it's anybody's ball until Australia's right winger Morton comes to the rescue and gathers. Morton makes some headway before passing to full back Lenehan who runs into Lions out centre. Price O'Reilly gets the ball, but there's an infringement. Referee Mr. O'Callaghan held up play for many breaches. Australia received seventeen free kicks and the British Isles ten.

Price takes the ball for the Lions, sends it away to O'Reilly, who heads for the touchline but is well dumped by Lenehan, Australia's fullback. Lenehan repeatedly came in with crashing tackles to end many British drives for the line. Here Jeeps gets the ball to Risman who passes to Price, onto Hewitt with fullback Scotland joining in, then to winger Jackson who is stopped by Lenehan.

The crowd of twenty thousand several times heckled the Lions play, but the British team always held the lead throughout the game. With this kick by Hewitt, the Lions put another three points on the board.

Moreton for Australia gets the ball smartly away to halfback Connor, who runs into trouble, Lions Halfback Jeeps in possession now, but he's caught by Australian second rower Miller.

Cue : Donald kicks after crowd
Donald makes certain of this free kick for Australia. His second successful attempt, close on half time.

From this lineout, Jeeps to Risman to Hewitt, who quickly grubber kicks, but the ball is taken by Connor who is forced out of touch.

Australia goes on the attack. In centre Len Diette gathers and passes back to Fullback Lenehan, who is jammed for space and is well stopped by the Lions.

British fullback Ken Scotland kicked this superb goal, a highlight of the Lions' seventeen-six victory over Australia.
