Background: Iraq said on February 13 that more than 15,000 Iranian troops had been killed in battles the pervious week, when Iran launched a new offensive in the Gulf War. A military High Command official in Baghdad said the Iranians had lost 15,258 men. He added that the Iraqis had destroyed or captured 98 Iranian tanks and 81 armoured personnel carriers. His statements were backed by pictures coming out of Iraq showing the bodies of dead Iranians and their tracked vehicles either destroyed or trapped in deep ditches which score the flat, barren territory of the battlefront. also on display were sad and ragged prisoners, some with their wounds swathed in bloodstained bandages; and piles of captured small arms, including machine-guns and rocket-launchers. Iran on February 14 acknowledged that its forces were making what it described as slow progress in its offensive. But the Speaker of the Iranian Majlis (parliament), Hojatoleslam Rafsanjani, said that his country was determined to continue its fight against Iraq until it achieved final victory. His statement was backed by scenes of defiant Iranian troops parading to the strains of a military band through the streets of Teheran as onlookers admired their fighting men. Anti-United States sentiments were displayed by the crowd. A cardboard effigy of "Uncle Sam" was hung from a gallows and several members of the crowd jumped through a hope covered in a blazing Stars and Stripes flag. To back up the message of defiance, Iran's ruler, Ayatollah Khomeini, made one of his rare public appearances before a near-ecstatic crowd who greeted him with much waving of arms. He addressed the meeting in solemn tones as his ever-faithful Revolutionary Guard stood rigidly in line before him.
