  • Description

THE BASUTOLAND INDEPENDENCE CONFERENCE OPENED ITS FIRST SESSION IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AND HEARD A PLEA FORM MEMBERS OF THE TERRITORY'S OPPOSITION PARTIES FOR INDEPENDENCE TO BE DELAYED.

IT IS PROPOSED TO MAKE BASUTOLAND INDEPENDENT IN OCTOBER, BUT OPPOSITION PARTIES BELIEVE THAT A WITHDRAWAL OF BRITISH AUTHORITY UNDER PRESENT CONDITIONS WOULD LEAD TO A TAKEOVER BY SOUTH AFRICA.

THE OPPOSITION PARTIES' ARGUMENT WAS PRESENT BY MR. NTSU MOKHEHLE, OF THE BASUTOLAND CONGRESS PARTY. HE WAS SUPPORTED BY SMALLER OPPOSITION GROUPS.

BASUTLAND, WITH AN AREA OF MORE THAN 11-THOUSAND 700 SQUARE MILES (18,825 SQUARE KILOMETRES), HAS A POPULATION OF JUST UNDER ONE MILLION PEOPLE. THE COUNTRY IS ENTIRELY SURROUNDED BY SOUTH AFRICA.

THE OPPOSITION PARTIES HAVE DEMANDED AN ELECTION IN THE COUNTRY BEFORE INDEPENDENCE IS GRANTED.

THE TALKS, UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE COLONIAL SECRETARY, MR FRED LEE AND SENIOR OFFICIALS OF THE BRITISH COLONIAL OFFICE, ARE ALSO BEING ATTENDED BY THE BASUTOLAND DELEGATION, AND MR. EDWIN LEANYA, LEADER OF THE SMALL MAREMATLOU FREEDOM PARTY.

IT IS PROPOSED THAT ON INDEPENDENCE BASUTOLAND WILL BECOME THE KINGDOM OF LESOTHO.
