The arguments of the people of Malta have degenerated into mob violence. In and around?

  • Description

The arguments of the people of Malta have degenerated into mob violence. In and around Valletta, today, (April 28) a 24 hour strike, called by the General Workers Union, was the vehicle for a number of ugly incidents. Police and soldiers were stoned, an army jeep and a naval tug set on fire, and the cables of the British radio rediffusion service out. Union cars marked 'Strike Control' sped from point to point during the day, encouraging the 'activist' elements and scattering leaflets. These bore the words, in Maltese - 'The people of Malta obey the General Workers Union, and not the Governor.' Early this morning a Land Rover of the Royal Malta Artillery was stopped by a mob on the waterfront and the captain and driver aboard dragged from the vehicle. Petrol was thrown over the car which was then set on fire and thrown into the harbour. About noon a crowd or nearly 300 rioters invaded the waterfront and boarded a small Royal Navy tug and set it on fire. Police who arrived were received with a bail of stones but eventually succeeded in driving the rioters from the quayside. After this day of violence, the Governor, Sir Robert Laycock, tonight banned all demonstrations and meetings on the island for three months.
