    THE REPUBLIC GAINED ITS INDEPENDENCE ON AUGUST 17, 1960. THE PRESIDENT, MR LEON MBA, IS ALSO MINISTER FOR DEFENCE AND JUSTICE. AT LATEST COUNT THE REPUBLIC HAD A POPULATION OF JUST OVER 420,000. THE MAIN EXPORTS INCLUDE OIL AND GOLD THROUGH THE MAIN PORTS - LIBREVILLE AND PORT GENTIL.

    IN JANUARY 1959 THE GABONESE REPUBLIC FORMED AN "ECONOMIC, TECHNICAL AND CUSTOMS" UNION WITH THE THREE OTHER FORMER TERRITORIES OF FRENCH EQUATORIAL AFRICA, THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, CHAD AND THE CONGO. THE REPUBLIC WAS ADMITTED TO THE UN ON SEPTEMBER 20, 1960.
