A JAPANESE NAMC (NIPPON AEROPLANE MANUFACTURING COMPANY) YS-11A MULTIPLE-PURPOSE TURBO-PROP AIRCRAFT ARRIVED IN ABIDJAN FROM DAKAR, SENEGAL, ON WEDNESDAY (17 DECEMBER) TO CONTINUE ITS DEMONSTRATION TOUR OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND SHOW ITS CAPABILITIES.

THE YS-11A IS A SHORT/MEDIUM-RANGE TRANSPORT POWERED BY TWO BRITISH ROLLS-ROYCE DART MARK 542-10K TURBO-PROP ENGINES. IT HAS SEATS FOR UP TO 64 PASSENGERS AND HAS A FLIGHT CREW OF FOUR, INCLUDING TWO CABIN ATTENDANTS. ITS PAYLOAD IS 14,495 POUNDS (6,575 KILOGRAMMES) AND IT CAN TAKE OFF AND LAND ON SEMI-PREPARED RUNWAYS OF NO MORE THAN 1,203 YARDS (1,100 METRES).

DESIGNED WITH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FROM THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT, THE YS-11 IS JAPAN'S FIRST POST-WAR SERIES OF CIVIL AIRCRAFT AND IS MANUFACTURED BY A GROUP OF SIX PRIVATE COMPANIES. ITS FIRST FLIGHT WAS IN AUGUST 1962.

MORE THAN 100 YS-11S HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOLD, PRINCIPALLY TO THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, PERU, BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, KOREA, GREECE, AND THE PHILIPPINES.

THE BRITISH AND DUTCH ARE ALREADY TRYING TO INTEREST AFRICAN COUNTRIES WITH MUCH-NEEDED SHORT-HAUL AIRCRAFT CAPABLE OF LANDING ON SEMI-PREPARED AIRSTRIPS, THE FORMER WITH THEIR HAWKER-SIDDELEY 784 (ONE OF WHICH WAS SOLD TO ZAMBIA) AND THE LATTER WITH THEIR FOKKER FRIENDSHIP, WHICH HAS FOUND A MARKET WITH EAST AFRICAN AIRWAYS. NOW THE JAPANESE ARE TRYING TO CAPTURE A SHARE OF THIS MARKET WITH THE YS-11A.

FROM ABIDJAN THE YS-11A CONTINUES ITS TOUR TO CAMEROON. FROM THERE IT WILL GO ON TO CHAD, THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC, GABON, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE AND CONGO-KINSHASA.
