Background: WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS WENT TO THE POLLS ON WEDNESDAY TO VOTE IN THEIR COUNTRY'S GENERAL ELECTION. DR. HENDRIK VERWOERD, AND HIS NATIONAL PARTY, WERE RETURNED TO POWER WITH THE BIGGEST PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY IN SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY.

POLLING TOOK RACE IN 147 CONSTITUENCIES. THE MAIN ISSUE IN THE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN THE RACE PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH THE REPUBLIC'S FOUR-TO-ONE AFRICAN HAS NO VOTE.

THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY, THE UNITED PARTY, HAS CONCENTRATED ON ATTACKING THE GOVERNMENT'S APARTHEID POLICY SAYING THE EIGHT INDEPENDENT AFRICAN TERRITORIES - BANTUSTANS -IT ENVISAGES WOULD BE A SERIOUS THREAT TO WHITE SOUTH AFRICA. ON THE COUNT THE UNITED PARTY HAS LOST SOME SEATS TO THE NATIONAL PARTY.

THE NATIONAL PARTY HAS WARNED THAT THE UNITED PARTY POLICY OF RACE FEDERATION UNDER WHITE CONTROL WITH LIMITED POLITICAL REPRESENTATION FOR AFRICANS MUST, ON PRACTICAL AND MORAL GROUNDS, LEAD TO AN EVENTUAL TAKE-OVER BY THE AFRICAN MAJORITY. IN THE RESULTS THE NATIONAL PARTY SEEMS TO HAVE WON 126 SEATS - WHICH IS AN 82-SEAT MAJORITY OVER THE OPPOSITION.

THE PROGRESSIVE PARTY OPPOSED BOTH MAIN PARTIES. IT STATES THAT THEIR POLICIES ARE IMMORAL AND STANDS FOR A POLICY ON NON-DISCRIMINATION AND A QUALIFIED FRANCHISE BASED ON MERIT. THEIR ONE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, MRS HELEN SUZMAN HAS BEEN RETURNED TO HER SEAT.
