    JARAWA: "Well, we have proposed certain projects, which the French government might be interested to assist in implementing, and among these is a telecommunications project for modernising the telephone and telecommunications system of the Banjul area in Gambia. We have also discussed one project which relates to cotton growing in Gambia. With French technical assistance, we have already carried out a pilot scheme project in this area, it has been extremely successful and promising."

    Background: Gambia is hoping to extend its national telecommunications network with financial and technical assistance from the French government. The nation's President, Sir Dawda Jarawa, told this to newsmen on February 24 in Paris, where he met President Francois Mitterrand at the start of an official visit. After the meeting, held att he Elysee Palace, the head of state said the French government had already financed a highly successful cotton-growing pilot scheme in Gambia. On the second day of his working visit, sir Dawda was due to visit an important telecommunications industrial complex in the provincial city of Amiens.
