In India on Wednesday (15 March), one of North Korea's three vice-Presidents, Mr. Kang Ryang Uk, had talks with the Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Morarji Desai. Mr. Uk had arrived in the country earlier that day.
SYNOPSIS: Before the talks, in the President's residence in New Delhi, Mr. Uk met with India's Foreign Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee.
When Prime Minister Desai arrived, the two leaders got straight down to their talks. No details were released, but they were expected to concentrate on issues of bilateral importance.
For the past three years, North Korea has been seeking to increase its ties with non-aligned countries, like India.
After the talks, Mr. Uk visited the Raj Ghat area, near the Indian capital, to place a wreath on a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian leader who was assassinated just over 30 years ago.
Mr. Uk, one of three vice-presidents in the Communist government of Marshal Kim 11-sung, is a member of the Central People's committee. His visit to India marks one of the infrequent trips to the sub-continent by North Korean leaders.
Relations between India and North Korea have improved markedly since 1973, when India gave North Korea full diplomatic recognition.
