  • Description

Ministers of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) meeting in Algiers, agreed today (Sunday, 26 January), to meet consumer nations, with the aim of discussing the world economic situation.

However, earlier, one of the leading delegates at the meeting -- Mr. Mani Said al-Utaibah, Minister of Oil and mineral Resources of the United Arab Emirates -- was non-committal when asked about a date for the meeting.

A communique issued at the end of the three-day OPEC conference attended by ministers of the 13 countries involved, said they had also agreed to start preparations for a conference of OPEC Heads of State -- to be held in Algiers between 21 February and 8 March.

This will be the first Head of State summit OPEC has ever held. It's main task will be to prepare a united approach to discussions with the main oil consumers.

The communique also said a committee has been established to draw up an agenda for the summit, which will include proposals for co-operation with other developing countries, particularly those hardest his by the present economic crisis.
