Background: With two weeks to go before the Belgian Congo's independence, Belgians June 15 continued to arrive in their homeland by air and sea from the Congo. At Antwerp, 250 of them arrived on the Belgian steamship Charleville - most of them women and children with luggage and pets. While they rejoin their families, their menfolk stayed on in the Congo until their employment position ends.

Meanwhile in the Congo's neighbouring Rhodesia, troops backed by jet aircraft moved to the borders for a month-long exercise. The previous day June 14 Katanga, the Congo's south-east rich mining province lay under a state of emergency - to continue while extremists press threats to seek a link-up with Rhodesia.
