Background: The imposing Dutch Embassy building in Jakarta is stripped of all its official emblems, signboards, and even the flag. These were removed last week in preparation for the closure of the Embassy Aug 30, following President Sukarno's severance of diplomatic relations with the Netherlands on Indonesia's last National Day, Aug 17. The severance of relations comes as a sequel to Holland's refusal to leave West New Guinea, also known as West Irian, which is claimed by Indonesia.

Britain has agreed to look after Dutch interests in Indonesia and British officials have taken over Dutch Embassy documents and other properties. Many of the dutch investments and properties in Indonesia - where there are still some 4,000 Dutch nationals - have already been seized by Indonesia.

At Jakarta airport Aug 30 the British and Australian Ambassadors were among those who came to say farewell to Dutch Ambassador Vixseboxse, his wife, and other Dutch Embassy officials, as they left for Singapore on the first leg of their journey home to Amsterdam.

The Indonesian Parliament Aug 31 called for seizure of remaining Dutch investments in Indonesia, including those in jointly owned enterprises. The forthcoming visit to Japan of a Dutch aircraft carrier has led to friction between Indonesia and Japan.
