    FOR THE RAILWAYS, NEWSPAPERS AND SOME INDUSTRIES THE STRIKE BEGAN TODAY. ELECTRICITY SUPPLIES TO FACTORIES WERE CUT FROM 2200 GMT, SHORTLY AFTER RAILWAYMEN IN PARIS STARTED THEIR WALK-OUT.

    PRINTERS WERE DUE TO STRIKE TWO HOURS AFTER PRESIDENT DE GAULLE BEGAN A PRESS CONFERENCE, EFFECTIVELY MUZZLING NEWSPAPER COMMENT UNTIL THURSDAY.

    TOMORROW, SHOPS, OFFICES AND CINEMAS WILL BE CLOSED - THEIR POWER CUT OFF AND THEIR EMPLOYEES STRANDED.
