  • Description

IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL SERVICE THERE IS ONE ASPECT WHICH PEOPLE IN THE MORE HIGHLY DEVELOPED NATIONS OF THE WORLD TAKE, IN SOME MEASURE, FOR GRANTED - AND THAT IS MEDICINE. IN CITIES OR EVEN IN SMALL RURAL COMMUNITIES AND INTER-RELATED NETWORK OF GENERAL PRACTITIONERS, CLINICS AND HOSPITALS IS SOMETHING WHICH IS EITHER A SHORT WALK OR TELEPHONE CALL AWAY; A SERVICE THAT IS THERE WHEN IT IS NEEDED.

BUT IN THE DEVELOPING NATIONS OF THE WORLD, MEDICAL SERVICES ARE, AS YET SMALL OR LIMITED. YET, EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO PROVIDE THIS ESSENTIAL SERVICE TO THE MOST REMOTE PARTS OF THE EARTH AND ONE AREA WHERE THIS IS A DAILY REALITY IS IN EAST AFRICA.

OVER TENS OF THOUSANDS OF SQUARE MILES IN KENYA, UGANDA AND TANGANYIKA MEDICAL TREATMENT IS BEING OFFERED TO SMALL HAMLETS, TRIBAL VILLAGES AND REMOTE MISSIONS BY THE EAST AFRICAN FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE.

STARTED IN 1961, IT NOW HAS TWELVE DOCTORS AND TWO AIRCRAFT WITH AN OPERATIONAL HEADQUARTERS IN NAIROBI. SIMILAR IN STRUCTURE TO THE OLDER, AND PERHAPS BETTER KNOWN ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE IN AUSTRALIA, IT HAS CERTAIN DIFFERENCES TAILORED TO LOCAL NEEDS.

INSTEAD OF FLYING THE PATIENTS TO BASE HOSPITALS FOR TREATMENT, THE EAST AFRICAN SERVICE TAKES TREATMENT TO WHERE IT IS NEEDED - OFTEN PERFORMING DELICATE OPERATIONS ??? MAKE SHIFT OPERATING THEATRES.

SINCE ITS INCEPTION, THE EAST AFRICAN FLYING DOCTORS HAVE FLOWN MORE THAN A QUARTER-OF-A-MILLION MILES PERFORMED MORE THAN 570 MAJOR OPERATIONS AND TREATMENTS NEARLY 8 THOUSAND PATIENTS.

WHERE IT HAS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE TO GIVE ON-THE-SPOT TREATMENT, PATIENTS HAVE BEEN FLOWN TO NAIROBI FOR SPECIALIZED CARE.

ON SATURDAY (AUGUST 8) A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN FLEW WITH DR. HALE TOLLETH FROM NAIROBI TO AMUDAT ON THE KENYA-UGANDA BORDER. THERE DR. TOLLETH PERFORMED TWO OPERATIONS, ONE ON A TRIBESMAN WOUNDED IN FIGHTING ON THE SONALI BORDER, THE OTHER ON A SUK TRIBE BOY SUFFERING FROM HERNIA.

BOTH OPERATIONS WERE SUCCESSFUL - AND THE COST, WELL OVER GBP500 STERLING. IT'S MORE THAN THE SIMPLE TRIBESMAN COULD EVER AFFORD, BUT IT'S FREE AND JUST TYPICAL OF THE DUTIES PERFORMED BY EAST AFRICA'S FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE.
