• Short Summary

IN THE CONTINIUNG POLITICAL CRISIS IN GREECE, MR. STEPHANOPOULOS, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER IN THE PAPANDREOU?

  • Description

IN THE CONTINIUNG POLITICAL CRISIS IN GREECE, MR. STEPHANOPOULOS, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER IN THE PAPANDREOU GOVERNMENT, CALLED ON KING CONSTANTINE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE KING HAD REFUSED TO SELECT MR. PAPANDREOU AGAIN, OR CALL ELECTIONS, AND INVITED MR. STEPHANOPOULOS TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES OF FORMING ANOTHER GOVERNMENT.

AFTERWARDS HE CALLED ON MR. PAPANDREOU, THE LATTER STILL ADAMANT THAT ONLY HE SHOULD BE GIVEN THE MANDATE TO FORM A GOVERNMENT. TODAY, MR. STEPHANOPOULOS IS SEEKING THE SUPPORT OF HIS PARTY BEFORE MAKING A DECISION ON WHETHER TO ACCEPT THE KING'S OFFER. BOTH POLITICAL LEADERS BELONG TO THE SAME PARTY - THE CENTRE UNION, CURRENTLY SPLIT BY THE 24-DAY CRISIS.

BECAUSE OF THE UPHEAVAL, THE KING DID NOT ATTEND THIS YEAR'S ANNIVERSARY PARADE MAKING THE END OF THE GUERILLA WAR IN GREECE IN 1949. THE SALUTE WAS TAKEN BY THE OUTGOING DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. COSTOPOULOS STAVROS.

SOME 40,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING FOREIGN MILITARY ATTACHES, WATCHED THE CELEBRATIONS IN THE ATHENS STADIUM. IT INCLUDED A MARCH PAST BY UNITS OF THE ARMED FORCES AND WAR VETERANS' GROUPS. IT WAS THE ALLEGATIONS OF RIGHT-WING ELEMENTS IN THE ARMED FORCES AND DEMANDS FOR A PURGE BY MR. PAPANDREOU THAT LED TO THE GREEK POLITICAL STORM. THE SUBSEQUENT GOVERNMENT OF MR. NOVAS, ANOTHER CENTRE UNION LEADER, COLLAPSED IN A VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE LAST WEEK.
