COMMENTARY: "Vice President Ford's introductory remarks were scheduled to last ten to fifteen minutes. Instead he said only this:"

GERALD FORD: "Since I am an instant vice-president, I would like to add about two sentences. This is my first privilege and highest honour to introduce to you my personal friend, an outstanding president....The President of the United States."

COMMENTARY: "At a thousand dollar a plate dinner, an encumbent President is usually treated like a rich uncle whose every word may be the key to wealth. Last night the audience seemed to be listening to a garrulous spinster aunt, who was after all, still family. There was applause in the appropriate spots as the president reviewed his programmes in health, transportation and welfare. He made references as he almost always does in public appearances to the ed of the Vietnam War and the opening of the door to russia and China. Without mentioning recent defeats in Michigan and Ohio, he predicted a Republican victory in the fall Congressional election."

NIXON: "What we are going to have in the fall of this year for our candidates to point to are truce abroad and prosperity at home. You take a good candidate and he can win on that kind of platform. That is why I say we can win."

COMMENTARY: "Last night the words Watergate and Impeachment were never used on the Speakers platform."

Background: United States' President richard Nixon and Vice President Gerald Ford were the star attractions at a 1,000 dollar a plate (400 sterling) Republican Fund Raising Dinner in Washington on Wednesday night (27 March).

However, despite a take of more than 600,000 dollars (270,000 sterling) the dinner produced less campaign money than any of its type in years. Pre-Watergate dinners could bring in as much as 1,5000,000 dollars (650,000 sterling) for the Republican Party. The money will be used in the campaign for the congressional elections in the United States later this year. Significantly, seven of the 11 Republican senators running for re-election have said they do not want President Nixon campaigning for them this year. However, there was no sign of this at the Washington dinner where Vice president Gerald ford hailed President Nixon as a personal friend and a outstanding president.

President Nixon himself predicted a victory in the elections despite recent defeats in Michigan and Ohio. The President said that the main factors that would influence people to vote for the Republicans was the achievement of truce abroad and prosperity at home. Watergate and the President's possible impeachment were not mentioned.
