  • Description

A DECISION HAS STILL NOT BEEN MADE ON THE PROPOSED CHANNEL LINK BETWEEN ENGLAND AND FRANCE. ALTHOUGH AN OFFICIAL STUDY GROUP HAS COME OUT IN FAVOUR OF A TUNNEL INSTEAD OF A BRIDGE, THE SCHEME STILL AWAITS RATIFICATION FROM BOTH GOVERNMENTS. LAST SEPTEMBER, BRITISH TRANSPORT MINISTER ERNEST MARPLES SAID IT WAS "IMPORTANT THE MATER SHOULD BE SETTLED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, "BUT POINTED OUT THAT FURTHER INTENSIVE STUDIES WOULD BE NEEDED BEFORE A FINAL DECISION.

FILM SHOWS A MOCK-UP OF HOW FRANCE ENVISAGES THE TUNNEL ENTRANCE AND WORKINGS AT HER END.

THE TUNNEL'S FRENCH TERMINAL, ACCORDING TO THE STUDY GROUP, WOULD BE ABOUT FIVE MILES (8 KMS) INLAND, SOUTH-WEST OF CALAIS. IT WOULD CONSIST OF TWO SEPARATE TUNNELS, EACH CONTAINING A SINGLE RAIL TRACK.

VEHICLES WOULD DRIVE STRAIGHT ON TO LOW-SLUNG GOODS WAGONS FOR THE 32-MILE (51-KM) TRIP TO ENGLAND, INCLUDING 23 MILES (36 KMS) UNDER THE CHANNEL ITSELF. TRAINS, CAPABLE OF CARRYING 3,600 VEHICLES AND HOUR IN EITHER DIRECTION, WOULD LEAVE AT INTERVALS VARYING FROM FIVE TO 30 MINUTES, ACCORDING TO DEMAND.

SIXTY-FIVE MINUTES IS THE TIME ENVISAGED BY THE GROUP FOR EACH CAR TO CLEAR FORMALITIES, MAKE THE TRIP AND PASS THROUGH CUSTOMS. CONSTRUCTION COST: ABOUT GBP143 MILLION.
