    SIXTY-ONE DELEGATES FROM 24 AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE ATTENDING THE SECOND MEETING OF THE REGIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS PLANNING COMMITTEE FOR AFRICA WHICH IS BEING HELD IN ADDIS ABABA.

    THE MEETING, SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATION UNION, IS STUDYING WHAT AFRICA'S NEEDS WILL BE IN THIS FIELD UP TO 1975. ASSISTING DELEGATES ARE SOME 40 EXPERTS FROM INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS, BRITAIN, FRANCE, THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION.

    AT THE OPENING SESSION, THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY, MR. DIALLO TELLI, SAID THAT NEXT TO DECOLONISATION, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN AFRICA WAS THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIONS.

    MR. SALAH HINIT OF ETHIOPIA, THE HOST NATION, TOLD THE MEETING THAT THE GOAL WAS 24-HOUR DIRECT TRAFFIC BETWEEN ALL COUNTRIES IN AFRICA IN PLACE OF THE TELEPHONE, TELEGRAPH AND TELEX CONNECTIONS. MOST OF THEM CURRENTLY RUN THROUGH EUROPEAN TRANSIT CENTRES.

    SYNOPSIS: TELECOMMUNICATIONS EXPERTS ARE MEETING IN ADDIS ABABA.... THEY WERE WELCOMED BY THE REGIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS PLANNING COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, M. LEON DIA, AND THE ETHIOPIAN MINISTER OF STATE FOR POSTS, M. ATO HINIT.

    SIXTY-ONE DELEGATES FROM 24 AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE ATTENDING THIS SECOND MEETING OF THE PLANNING COMMITTEE FOR AFRICA. THE MEETING IS SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION. THE CHIEF AIM OF THE DISCUSSIONS IS TO ASSESS WHAT AFRICA'S NEEDS WILL BE IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS UP TO 1975.

    MEMBERS OF INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS AS WELL AS EXPERTS FROM BRITAIN, FRANCE, THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION ARE ADVISING DELEGATES AT THE MEETING WHICH GOES ON TILL FEBRUARY 8TH.

    THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION, DR. M.B. SARAWATE STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING SERVICES IN AFRICA.

    AND THERE WAS A SPEECH BY THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY. M. DIALLO TELLI. AFTER DECOLONISATION, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN AFRICA WAS COMMUNICATIONS.

    REPRESENTING THE ECONOMIC COMMISSION FOR AFRICA IS MR. LARDINER AND ANOTHER SPEAKER WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THE CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE OF THE INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH SERVICES, M. ROUVIER.
