  • Description

History was made in Hong Kong when the Crown Colony's second university was officially opened.

Speaking as Chancellor of the new university, the Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Robert Black, told his audience that the Chinese people in the Colony had, with skill and resource, turned to advantage what Western science and technology offered.

The opening day was one of the most impressive yet seen in Hong Kong.It marked too, the conclusion of only 18 months of planning by a special commission, which was headed by Mr.J.S.Fulton, Vice Chancellor of the University of Sussex, set up by Hong Kong's Government to advise on the creation of a new university.

The Chinese language will be the principal medium of instruction in the new university, which is found out of an amalgamation of three existing colleges.

Hong Kong's first university is little more than 50 years old; the new Chinese University, as it is to be known, will supplement the work of training the Colony's younger generation and concentration on the classics.

The three colleges out of which the new university is formed have already achieved a high standard of education. Now, their resources will be combined to make one of the finest academic centres in South-East Asia.
