  • Description

These shots were taken in Leningrad on November 7.

The people assembled on the bank of the Neva River, to watch the famous cruiser "Aurora".

Every nation has sacred relics to remain it of the most important and significant events in its history. For the Soviet people, the cruiser "Aurora" is one of those relics.

On that gloomy, October evening in 1917, this cruiser fired the signal for storming the Winter Palace in Leningrad, the last stronghold of the capitalist Provisional government.

That shot was joined by salvoe and machinegun fire, while thousands of men shouted "Hurrah!" and dashed forward to storm the palace.

That was half a century ago. Now, veterans of the revolution and civil war that followed, veteran sailors of the "Aurora", and old communists boarded the legendary cruiser. With them were sailor Heroes of the Soviet Union who had fought German fascism, sailors of the Baltic Fleet today, cadets from Nakhimov and Suvorov military schools, ald Leningrad children.

These representatives of the generations that made the revolution, that saved it in the greatest of all wars, and that are only beginning their lives lined up on the deck of the old battleship, linked in our minds with the beginning of the new epoch for mankind.

A command was issued to raise the revolutionary flag of the "Aurora". This is the very historical flag which the ship sailed in October 1917.

The cruiser's first commissar, Mr. Alexander Belyshev, went to the forward gun. It was he who ordered that shot to be fired half a century ago.

The veteran Baltic sailor commanded: "In honour of the Great October revolution, of the Leninist Communist Party, and of our heroic people, forward gun, fire!"
Again, just like 50 years ago, the shot roared over the Neva River. This time, its echo blended with the holiday salutes over Leningrad, Moscow, and the capitals of the Republics of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union is celebrating the half century jubilee of the greatest event in its history, the October Revolution, in a blaze of illuminations and fireworks and to the sounds of music.
