  • Description

A THREE-DAY PEACE MARCH FROM TEL AVIV ARRIVED IN JERUSALEM YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). THE MARCH, ORGANISED BY THE SELF-APPOINTED PEACE-SEEKER ABIE NATHAN, IS AIMED AT RECONCILING ISRAEL WITH THE ARABS.

ABIET NATHAN, A TEL AVIV RESTAURANT OWNER, LED THE MARCH FROM TEL AVIV TO JERUSALEM CARRYING PEACE APPEALS TO THE KNESSET (PARLIAMENT), THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL U THANT, AND KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN. WHEN THE MARCH ARRIVED IN JERUSALEM, MR NATHAN ADDRESSED THE CROWD AND WAS THEN GIVEN A POLICE ESCORT TO ENTER THE KNESSET, WHERE HE WAS ADMITTED THROUGH THE BACK DOOR.

MR NATHAN MADE A SPECTACULAR BUT UNSUCCESSFUL PEACE BID LAST FEBRUARY WHEN HE MADE A LANE FLIGHT TO EGYPT FOLLOWED BY A WORLD TOUR IN SUPPORT OF HIS AIMS. WHEN HE ARRIVED IN JERUSALEM YESTERDAY HE TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HE KNEW THE MARCH WOULD NOT BRING PEACE BUT THAT HE FELT IT WAS "A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION."
